That means a lot of tents are designed for just two people, in reality, which may be perfect if you’re going solo or as a couple but not so much otherwise. Instead, go with one that sleeps 6 or 8 to give yourself; and your kids; some breathing room.

Kids are curious and when camping, that curious nature could get them hurt. As soon as you arrive, set clear boundaries as to where they are allowed to play, what they are allowed to touch, and where they shouldn’t be messing.

You still want to let them explore but stay within those limits. Always agree on a time to come back together before heading out again. This will help keep kids safe and insight as well as prevent any arguments from breaking out over who gets to go first or last because they didn’t want to wait their turn.

By remembering to bring their favorites, half of that challenge is taken care of. I recommend bringing board games too – these are always huge hits with the older kids. We can’t go camping without the Scrabble game – our teen might have a fit.

They will need and want the comfort that their favorite item brings. By the same token, don’t make the mistake of leaving it behind when you pack up camp. No one wins in that situation, trust me.

In addition to their favorite toy, make sure you pack plenty of books for your little one. This will keep them busy in the car on the way there and back again, but also give them something fun to do at camp or around a fire.

Teach them Leave No Trace. Kids are naturally pretty carefree when it comes to their environment. They don’t keep an area clean as adults do. They’re also not always very observant about what they leave behind in their wake. Show them how important it is to take care of one’s surroundings and teach them that if you pack it in, you better pack it out!

First Aid is important too! Just like any other outdoor activity, camping has its risks. Be prepared by always carrying a first aid kit and know what to do in case of an emergency injury, such as how to treat heatstroke or severe burns. You can give them lessons on what to do.

First of all, we ALWAYS like to take a few packs of freeze-dried meals with us. Let’s just say that sometimes, things are out of your control. It might be warmed than you planned and that cooler isn’t as cold as you are comfortable with so any meat on day two or three looks a little “iffy”.

Freeze-dried meals are great because they last a LONG time, so you can take it camping with you and actually be able to eat later. We are talking 10-25 years kind of a long time, and are perfectly shelf-stable.

Camping Breakfast Ideas

  • Fried eggs and bacon with toast, or breakfast burritos
  • Campfire Breakfast: Scrambled eggs cooked in the bottom of a camping pot, with bacon on top. There are many variations to this recipe and it is an excellent start to any day at camp!
  • Omelet Wraps: These omelets can be made ahead of time, wrapped up tightly in foil or parchment paper, and placed on the coals of a campfire with any desired fillings.
  • Baked Eggs in a can: Simply cut an empty soup or tuna fish can into sections so that it fits snugly over your camping stove’s burner. Pour beaten eggs inside and bake until cooked through.
  • Oatmeal: A healthy, filling breakfast that is easy to make in camping conditions! Mix the oats together with milk or water as well as raisins, nuts, and cinnamon. Add brown sugar if you want something sweet!

  • Tuna salad on crackers with veggies
  • Cheeseburgers wrapped in foil, cooked over the open fire for a few minutes to heat up. Toppings: lettuce, tomato, onion slices, cheese slices (optional), mustard or mayonnaise packets

Chicken: this is very simple, just throw a couple of seasonings or some barbecue sauce on it, grill it up and you’re set! The nice thing about chicken is you can use it for multiple meals and use it in tons of different ways.

Steak: The easiest way to do this while camping is to grab a pre-made marinade in a bag. Let the steaks marinate, grill, then enjoy!

Kabobs: Making kabobs before you go is a great meal idea and something that can be grilled easily. Try and pre-make them before you go just in case you’re limited on space for slicing veggies!

Vegetables:

Corn: Grilled corn is really simple and most of the time doesn’t need seasoning!

Asparagus: Asparagus covered in a little olive oil and salt and put on the grill is a simple meal idea that is super satisfying!

Zucchini: Zucchini is a huge hit and tastes delicious when it’s grilled! A perfect vegetable to round off any meal idea.

Onions and Mushrooms: Onion and mushrooms are a great one-pan idea that can be cooked on the grill.

Snacks:

As with any trip, snacks are super important and you want to make sure you have good ideas, as well as some that are healthy. You won’t feel good if you load up on junk food and you want to feel good on your trip!

  • Take a break for meals that allow you to try the regional food.
  • Stop at roadside produce stands and farm markets to enjoy in-season, local produce. (Don’t buy too much though; you don’t have anywhere to really store it.)

Be Safe

  • Invest in a roll of non-slip shelf paper and ensure all galley shelves are covered.
  • Use plastic dinner and storage ware (preferably non-disposable) – glass is too dangerous in a moving kitchen.
  • If you use liquid propane to cook and cool, ensure it’s turned off while the RV is in motion. (Liquid propane is highly volatile. If the gas line breaks, one spark can cause an explosion.) While driving, the refrigerator will stay cool if the door isn’t opened too frequently.
  • Secure all cooking gadgets and utensils. In an accident, these things can become deadly projectiles.
  • Ensure you have a 5-pound BC-rated fire extinguisher in the galley and near each exit. Make sure your entire crew knows where these are and how to use them.

Be Healthy

It can be difficult to stick to a healthy eating pattern on the road. Make these four habits part of your daily routine and you’ll feel better on your trip and won’t come home with pounds to lose:

  • Include fruits and vegetables at every sit-down meal.
  • Limit coffee and soda to one serving each per day.
  • Keep and use fruit for snacks.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Make sure you get up, walk around, and stretch while you can.
